Chapter 45: Emma

Overview

Six months after leaving Justin, Emma has built a stable life in Wakan, begun trauma treatment, and chosen no contact with Amber. Feeling strong enough to risk love and loss, Emma decides to return to Justin and see whether anything remains between them. Before she can reach him, Sarah calls for help from school, and that reunion confirms that Justin's family still trusts and misses Emma, pushing Emma to finally face him.

Summary

Six months later, Emma is living at Grant House in Wakan with the family she found through Daniel. She and Maddy left Royaume after Emma's breakup with Justin, and Alexis hired them at the local satellite clinic. In Wakan, Emma has also learned more about Amber's past, heard that Amber burned down Neil's house before disappearing, and started to understand both the damage Amber caused and the brokenness that shaped her.

As Emma settles into work and daily life, she reflects on how much Maddy sacrificed to stay beside her over the years. Therapy has changed Emma's sense of herself: CBT, talk therapy, and EMDR have helped Emma manage her complex PTSD, stop living out of a suitcase, and believe she can remain in one place without disappearing into isolation. Emma has chosen no contact with Amber, and forgiving Amber has helped Emma finally feel free of the burden she carried for most of her life.

Because Emma now feels steady and capable of lasting love, Emma decides that the six-month anniversary of arriving in Wakan will be the day she returns to Justin. Emma plans the drive so she can see Justin alone while the children are at school, but she is terrified that Justin may have moved on or may no longer want her near his family. Even so, Emma knows Justin and the children still feel like home, and Emma wants the rooted, permanent life with them that once scared her.

Before Emma reaches Justin's house, Sarah calls from school and asks Emma to pick her up because Sarah has gotten her first period and does not want to involve Alex or Leigh. Emma almost refuses because seeing Sarah feels nearly as hard as seeing Justin, but Emma remembers facing the same moment without a mother and chooses to help. At school, Emma feels guilty for her absence, yet Sarah insists Justin will not mind because Emma is still on the emergency contact list.

Emma buys Sarah supplies, takes Sarah to Culver's, and calmly explains how to manage cramps, pads, and laundry. During the conversation, Sarah tells Emma about the family's new routines, Justin's parenting, and how everyone has adjusted since Emma left. When Sarah admits that the family misses Emma and says she knew Emma would come if called, Emma realizes she has already proven she is not Amber and does not abandon people she loves. Encouraged by Sarah, Emma agrees to come inside when they get home and finally face Justin.
