Chapter 40: Emma
Overview
Emma’s birthday begins with the kind of care and celebration she rarely receives, deepening her sense that Justin’s home offers the safety and appreciation she has always lacked. After learning that Neil has ended things with Amber, Emma checks her DNA results and discovers that Amber concealed an entire maternal family, including a half brother, Daniel. Meeting Daniel confirms that Amber lied for years about relatives, money, and the circumstances of Emma’s childhood, leaving Emma devastated and finally ready to confront her mother.
Summary
On the morning of her birthday, Emma feels steadier after spending the previous night at Justin’s house, where his quiet care helped her recover from Amber’s latest crisis. While thinking about whether to block Amber, Emma recognizes how much of her life has been organized around waiting for her mother’s needs and how little peace that has ever brought her. She goes downstairs determined at least to protect her peace for the day.
Justin and the children surprise Emma with birthday pancakes, decorations, and a restored version of Stuffie, her beloved childhood toy, which Maddy secretly gave Justin so Faith could repair it. The gift and the family breakfast make Emma feel genuinely seen and appreciated, and Justin tells her she is not asking too much when she needs care; she has simply been asking the wrong person. Emma reflects on how naturally she fits into Justin’s household and how safe and valued she feels there.
At lunch, Maddy brings news that Neil ended things with Amber after witnessing the destruction she caused and offering to pay for treatment, which Amber refused. Emma realizes more clearly that Amber is responsible for her own choices and that Emma cannot save her. The conversation turns to Emma’s DNA test, and with encouragement from Maddy and Justin, Emma decides to look at the relatives section for the first time.
The results immediately upend Emma’s understanding of her life. She sees Amber listed, then discovers Daniel Grant, identified as a half brother on her mother’s side, followed by multiple aunts and cousins Amber had always claimed did not exist. Daniel messages Emma first, and during their phone call he explains that Amber had him at fifteen, that her parents raised him, that Amber visited over the years, and that their grandparents were still alive until eight years earlier. Shocked by learning that Amber hid an entire family from her, Emma agrees to meet Daniel that same day.
In Wakan, Emma meets Daniel and his wife, Alexis, at the old family house and is stunned by how much Daniel resembles her and how normal and welcoming the place feels. Daniel shows her family photos and explains that their grandparents left the house to Amber and that he later bought it from her for five hundred thousand dollars, revealing that Amber had resources and connections Emma never knew about. When Emma sees evidence that Amber visited this family during the years Emma was being neglected, she understands that her childhood was not just the result of chaos or hardship but of deliberate choices and sustained lies. Overwhelmed, Emma flees in a panic, and after Justin helps calm her on the roadside, she tells him to take her to Amber.
