Chapter 17: Justin
Overview
On the day before his mother reports to prison, Justin clings to his upcoming second date with Emma as the only bright spot in an otherwise painful transition. A short visit with his mother makes the deadline feel real and forces Justin to confront how much her sentence has changed his future, including any chance of pursuing Emma beyond her temporary stay. Later, Brad and Benny see how deeply Justin has fallen and offer practical help with the house, the kids, and his dog so he can keep making time for Emma.
Summary
Justin rides with Alex during a driving lesson and passes the time texting Emma about the Spotify playlists they exchanged. The playful conversation makes Justin happy and sharpens his anticipation for their second date that night in Stillwater. Justin is especially focused on the possibility of finally kissing Emma after Amber interrupted their near-kiss at the dock.
After lunch, Justin goes to his mother's house because she is leaving for prison the next day. The family has spent the week doing outings and memory-making activities before her sentence begins, and the ordinary feel of the day clashes with the major change coming. Justin reflects on how Emma's earlier conversation about emotional isolation made him soften toward his mother, and he wonders whether his mother has been stranded on her own private "island" without him understanding it.
Inside, Justin briefly sits with his mother and Leigh. When his mother asks about Emma and whether she will get to meet her, Justin gives a practical excuse about Emma's hospital schedule, though he knows the real reason is that Emma does not want to get involved with family she will soon leave behind. The exchange pushes Justin into a deeper realization: Emma is now the best part of his life, and if circumstances were different, he would want the freedom to follow that relationship wherever it could go. Instead, his mother's prison sentence, his father's absence, and custody of the children have closed off that future and left him grieving an alternate life he can already imagine.
Justin then stops by Brad's house to pick up a shirt for his date, and Brad, Faith, and Benny pull him into easy banter. When the conversation turns serious, Justin admits that he likes Emma a lot and only has four and a half weeks left with her. Brad and Benny tease him for being obviously smitten, but they also understand the pressure he is under. When Justin explains the plan to move back into his mother's house and take over the primary bedroom, Brad and Benny offer to help renovate the space so it feels like his own.
Finally, Justin asks for even more practical support: he wants help with childcare or watching his dog so he can keep seeing Emma while she is still in Minnesota. Brad and Benny immediately agree and add that Faith and Jane will likely help too. Justin leaves grateful that his friends recognize both his responsibilities and his need for this relationship, even as he knows he still cannot fully bring Emma into the larger parts of his life.
