Chapter 38: Emma
Overview
Emma’s new domestic happiness with Justin is abruptly interrupted when Amber spirals at Neil’s house, destroying property after being accused of stealing from him. Emma discovers that Amber is not truly in treatment and is repeating the same destructive cycle, forcing Emma to confront how little has changed despite her hopes.
The chapter matters because Emma is pulled back into the family crisis that shaped her life just as she has begun to feel safe and loved with Justin. Maddy’s help and warning about boundaries underline the central conflict Emma now faces: whether she will keep sacrificing herself to manage Amber’s chaos.
Summary
Over the next week and a half, Emma effectively moves into Justin’s daily life. She sleeps at his house every night, helps with Alex’s driving hours, Sarah’s dance, Chelsea’s school routine, Justin’s mother’s plants, and ordinary chores around the house. The routine deepens Emma’s attachment because she enjoys caring for Justin and the children, seeing Justin at work, and waking up beside him as summer turns toward fall.
That calm is broken when Maria calls in a panic and orders Emma to come immediately. Emma rushes to Neil’s house and finds Amber in the middle of a destructive episode, throwing Neil’s clothes into the yard while Maria storms off in frustration. Upstairs, Emma sees the room in chaos and learns that Neil has told Amber to leave or accept inpatient treatment after accusing her of stealing watches and cuff links. When Emma presses her, Amber effectively confirms it by saying Neil can afford replacements.
As Emma takes in the alcohol, decay, unfinished painting, and Amber’s physical deterioration, Emma realizes Amber has been unraveling for some time and that Emma missed the signs while absorbed in her life with Justin. Amber refuses help, denies being unwell, and lashes out at Emma, but Emma still tries to de-escalate the situation. Emma gets Amber into a bath, makes her tea, and questions her about therapy, only to discover Amber has not been seeing a licensed therapist at all but a "spiritual advisor." That revelation convinces Emma that nothing has truly changed.
Leaving the bathroom overwhelmed, Emma sees the familiar cycle ahead: police, hospital visits, theft, collapse, and more chaos. She blames herself for not warning Neil sooner and for believing Amber was better, and she immediately withdraws from the life she has built with Justin, deciding she cannot face him or the children that night. Outside, Emma begins cleaning up Neil’s clothes and finds Maddy already helping. Maddy comforts Emma, praises Emma’s empathy, but bluntly tells Emma that she needs boundaries and cannot keep caring about Amber more than she cares about herself.
