Chapter 20: Emma
Overview
After the evening with Christine and Leigh, Emma and Justin share a charged good-night scene that reveals how much Emma's feelings have deepened. Justin deliberately stops short of a real kiss, turning the moment into a tease that heightens their tension and forces Emma to admit that this relationship matters to her more than she intended.
Alone afterward, Emma recognizes both the thrill Justin awakens in her and the practical barriers she still sees between them. The chapter marks a key emotional shift: Emma is no longer detached, even as she continues insisting that a future with Justin cannot work.
Summary
After Justin and Emma drop off Leigh and Christine, they pause outside Neil's house while music blares from inside. Justin apologizes for the unexpected detour, but Emma tells him she enjoyed it. Their brief conversation about Leigh's loyalty to Christine leads Emma to reflect on how much she values having met Justin's mother, even though she keeps telling herself that her relationship with Justin is only temporary.
As Emma studies Justin, she realizes that her feelings are no longer casual. Emma wants Justin to think about her, talk about her, and treat her as someone meaningful rather than a passing fling. That recognition unsettles Emma because it is different from how she has approached past relationships, and it suggests that Justin is getting past emotional defenses Emma usually keeps firmly in place.
When Justin steps closer, Emma expects their long-awaited first kiss. Instead, after asking permission and building the moment, Justin kisses Emma on the forehead and pulls away. Emma protests that he was supposed to kiss her on the mouth, but Justin teasingly says they still have time and leaves her standing there frustrated. The delay has the opposite of a cooling effect: Justin's playful refusal makes Emma want him more intensely than before.
Waiting alone on the dock for Maddy, Emma reflects on how unusual her reaction is. Emma thinks about her lifelong emotional detachment, how rarely men affect her deeply, and how she often moves through life without feeling rooted to people or places. Justin's ability to make Emma's heart race excites her, but it also forces Emma to confront the limits of their situation: Emma does not want Justin's tied-down life or the responsibility of raising children, and she still plans to leave. Maddy picks Emma up, and Emma returns to the island carrying both desire and unease.
