12. A Way to Help
Contains spoilersOverview
Kaladin returns to Urithiru shattered, suffers a panic spiral, and is pulled to a social outing by Adolin. Over drinks with Veil and Radiant, Adolin resolves to find help for both Kaladin and Shallan. Finally, Rock declares he must return to the Horneater Peaks to face justice, and Kaladin grants him leave and an escort.
Summary
An epigraph from Navani urges transparency in fabrial craft, decrying deceptive practices that hide techniques. Returning to Urithiru with Windrunners and squires, Kaladin maintains a brave face but collapses into a panic spiral once alone in his rooms, haunted by Moash’s nihilism and unable to cry.
Syl fetches Adolin, who pointedly refuses to leave Kaladin alone and escorts him to Jez’s Duty in the Ten Rings market. There, with Veil (and briefly Radiant) and Pattern present, they mingle during a wedding party for Jor. Veil mentions Ialai’s murder is being covered as suicide; Radiant notes Shallan is stable but worries about half-formed personas lingering.
As they talk, Adolin presses for how to help Kaladin, who reveals Dalinar has removed him from combat. Adolin rejects simple platitudes and vows to find real ways to help. Kaladin offers practical support advice, which Adolin also applies to Shallan; Pattern agrees that Shallan still hides pain.
The group banters about matchmaking and Adolin’s lack of a spren. When Kaladin suggests discarding his Shardblade to attract a bond, Adolin refuses to abandon Maya. The social setting keeps Kaladin functional, though he remains miserable beneath the surface.
Rock then approaches privately. Bound by Horneater custom after “lifting the bow” to save Kaladin, Rock decides to return to the Peaks to face judgment, taking part of his family while others remain. Kaladin resists the urge to flee with him, instead granting his blessing, leave, and a Windrunner honor guard escort. They share an emotional farewell, and Rock departs, likely forever, leaving Kaladin reflective and alone with his burdens.
