After an all-night shift treating patients, Kaladin’s family hears from messenger Alili that Navani has surrendered and Urithiru will live under singer law. With fabrials failing, Lirin urges compliance and preparation to care for the frightened populace, while Kaladin struggles against the feeling of defeat and the loss of communication.

Syl warns that a patrol is methodically searching residences. A stormform Regal arrives with a writ to collect all incapacitated Radiants. The singers seize an unconscious Stoneward and her squires. When they attempt to take Teft, Kaladin confronts them, asking they fetch a Fused instead of pressing the issue.

Recognized as Stormblessed, Kaladin draws Stormlight and a close-quarters fight erupts. He endures a lightning blast, spends his remaining Light, and uses a surgeon’s scalpel to disable the Regal’s knee before cutting the carotid, killing him. Kaladin spares a shocked warform soldier and hastily heals what he can with a few remaining spheres.

Lirin tries and fails to save the dying Regal, then denounces Kaladin for killing in a place of healing and for undermining their mandate. Refusing to flee, Lirin vows to work within the occupation’s confines. Kaladin gathers spheres, lifts the unconscious Teft, and escapes toward the uninhabited center of the floor as singers converge—ending Part Two.
