Overview

Navani, newly separated from the Sibling’s power, honors Raboniel’s request and ends her life with anti-Voidlight, then turns to stabilize Urithiru. Elsewhere, Szeth confronts a witless, weeping Taravangian as Odium arrives in fury. Taravangian seizes Szeth’s sentient sword, destroys Odium’s Vessel, and Ascends to become the new Odium.

Summary

Navani withdraws from the Sibling’s power and feels small, yet maintains a faint sense of the tower. She and the Sibling debate trust and the ethics of fabrials; Navani promises to seek a true compromise. Finding Raboniel still barely alive, Navani learns the Fused made more anti-Voidlight and fears returning mad. Navani locates the anti-Voidlight gemstone and affixes it to the dagger.

At Raboniel’s request, Navani sings Honor’s tone while Raboniel hums Odium’s, aligning one last time. Navani then uses the anti-Voidlight dagger to grant Raboniel a merciful death. The Sibling calls it a kindness and reflects that anti-Light cements consequences for spren. Exhausted, Navani leaves a note honoring Raboniel’s body, takes the dagger and Rhythm of War, and moves to restore order in Urithiru.

Meanwhile, Taravangian wakes on an extremely unintelligent, emotional day, overwhelmed with weeping and fear. He finds a note from Renarin—"I’m sorry"—with two glowing gemstones. As a highstorm approaches, Szeth breaks into the room, confronting Taravangian about prior manipulations and the deaths in Shinovar. Szeth shatters the gemstones, releasing strange spren, then injures Taravangian and prepares to kill him by his own choice.

Odium appears in blazing gold, enraged over losing a champion and the unwanted agreement with Dalinar. As Szeth stabs Taravangian, Odium pulls Taravangian between realms. Gripped by sudden bravery, Taravangian seizes Szeth’s terrible, sentient sword, which cries, "Destroy!", and drives it into Odium’s chest. The sword consumes the Vessel, leaving the Shard’s power vacant; Taravangian connects to that vast Passion and accepts it, Ascending to become the new Odium.
