Radiant confronts Mraize for hiding that Restares is the Herald Kelek. Veil demands a true deal and reasons for the mission. At Mraize’s instruction, Veil opens a hidden compartment in the communication cube, revealing a dagger set with a gemstone intended to trap Kelek’s soul for interrogation.

Mraize argues the Heralds abandoned their oaths and that Kelek’s knowledge is vital but withheld, justifying forcible capture. He proposes Shallan replace Kelek at the last moment of the trial, using illusion to acquit Adolin and compel honorspren aid. Shallan recognizes the plan’s effectiveness, despite Veil’s caution about impersonating a Herald.

Mraize sweetens the offer, promising to release Shallan from apprenticeship and make her a full Ghostblood with access and influence. He presses her to “become the knife,” appealing to her desire to protect Adolin and Roshar, leaving her morally conflicted but considering the stratagem.

Separately, Adolin meets Kelek among the honorspren. Kelek—cynical and defeatist—declares Honor dead and treats the proceedings casually. Adolin petitions for a trial by witness; Kelek agrees and schedules it for the day after tomorrow at the public forum, despite Blended’s whispered warning that a public venue will be harder to sway.

Adolin realizes the Herald has prejudged the outcome, undermining any hope of impartiality. As Kelek departs, Blended resolves to prepare Adolin quickly for the now-inevitable, highly public contest.
