19. Garnets
Contains spoilersOverview
Navani pushes fabrial innovation, from vector-redirecting conjoiners to storm-powered energy storage, while probing Urithiru’s garnets and confirming the suppressor houses a corrupted spren. In a surprising turn, the coalition unanimously approves an Emul offensive and an honorspren envoy led by Adolin and Shallan, with Taravangian offering troops.
Dalinar suspects a trap but commits to the campaign, asking Navani to remain in Urithiru to safeguard the coalition and pursue the tower’s defenses.
Summary
Navani and Rushu study Urithiru’s pillar, focusing on four garnets that mirror the captured suppression fabrial. Rushu reports the device manifests a spren in Shadesmar that appears corrupted and uncooperative, raising concerns akin to Renarin’s spren. Navani tasks Rushu to find a way to activate the garnets—believed to have protected the tower from Fused—and to attempt reversing the suppressor to target enemies instead of Radiants. She also orders protocols to detect hidden Fused within Urithiru.
In the fabrial lab, Falilar and Tomor demonstrate a portable conjoined-device that can redirect applied force along any chosen vector, enabled by aluminum caging that filters motion. The design works but demands heavy manpower. Navani addresses this by revealing a plan to harness highstorm energy: windmills conjoined to a pulley system will reset heavy counterweights in a deep shaft, storing potential energy to power lifts and personal devices. She commissions switching mechanisms and multiple iterations, including a more appealing crossbow-like model.
At the coalition meeting, Taravangian confronts Navani privately, justifying his ruthless past as necessary for humanity’s survival. During formal talks, Dalinar proposes a decisive offensive into Emul. Azir immediately supports, and—unexpectedly—Taravangian offers twenty thousand troops. Queen Fen agrees and highlights the need for more Windrunners to protect fleets, learning Kaladin is on leave for a non-physical wound.
Sigzil proposes mending relations with the honorspren through a formal apology and request for aid, advising that non-Windrunner envoys attend with gifts and, if possible, Stormfather’s endorsement. Godeke volunteers; Shallan and Adolin offer to lead, with an added Stoneward and Truthwatcher (not Renarin). The monarchs unanimously approve both the Emul offensive and the Shadesmar envoy.
That night, Navani and Dalinar weigh Taravangian’s motives. Dalinar fears being outplayed but will lead the campaign, asking Navani to remain in Urithiru to safeguard the coalition and pursue the mystery of the tower’s defenses. They reaffirm their bond as Part One closes.
