Overview

Syl revels in a highstorm but worries how to help Kaladin’s worsening darkness. She petitions the Stormfather to let her feel his pain and later asks Dalinar to augment their bond; both refuse. Remembering her former knight’s death, Syl resolves to support Kaladin by drawing on her own past pain.

Summary

Sylphrena senses an approaching highstorm and flits through Urithiru. She visits Cord, who cooks and leaves Syl an offering, and notes Cord’s Shardplate feels content rather than pained. Syl reflects on her two minds—responsible and childlike—Kaladin’s improved sleep and new surgical duty, and her need to find a true way to help him.

When the storm arrives, Syl joins the windspren, contemplating the origins of intelligent spren and the storm’s singular, renewing voice. In a time-split, she speaks with the Stormfather, asking to be made able to feel Kaladin’s darkness to better aid him. He warns that spren exist for themselves, not to be consumed by Radiants, says her wish is dangerous, and refuses—having power but not the ability.

After the storm’s passing snow, Syl returns to Urithiru and visits Dalinar on his balcony. She thanks him for pushing Kaladin to change and asks if his Bondsmith powers can strengthen her bond to experience Kaladin’s emotions. Dalinar says he does not know how and that, even if possible, it would not be right, advising her instead to be present when Kaladin needs support.

Syl confides that her former knight, Relador, died long ago, and the loss made her “drift,” giving her a taste of a similar darkness. Acknowledging that memory, she decides to draw on her own pain to understand and support Kaladin without mirroring his feelings. She departs, comforted by a clearer path forward.
