Chapter 19
Contains spoilersOverview
Scarlett takes the MCAT and spirals about her performance. On the drive to the twins’ birthday party, Pen reveals she has been quietly seeing her former microeconomics TA and has a date. Hearing that Lukas scored a 525 sharpens Scarlett’s insecurities, while the confession adds a new secret within their friend group and synchro partnership.
Summary
Scarlett finishes the MCAT and feels gutted, convinced she did poorly. Exhausted, she collapses at home while Maryam jokingly stacks textbooks on her, trying to lighten the mood. Scarlett worries about retaking the test and frets over the month-long wait for results.
That evening, Pen drives Scarlett to the twins’ birthday party at the Shapiro twins’ house. In the messy, cozy car, Pen learns Scarlett just took the MCAT and mentions that Lukas took it last year and did well—specifically, a 525. The casual praise and Pen’s memory of celebrating with him leave Scarlett stung by insecurity and complicated jealousy.
Pen asks to share something “synchro partner to synchro partner” and admits she has a date the next day. She explains she has been quietly seeing a non-athlete from her advanced microeconomics class, off campus to be discreet. The man was her TA, is a PhD student only a few years older, the class is over, and she’s attracted to him.
Scarlett withholds judgment and teases by playing “Hot for Teacher,” turning the confession into laughter rather than conflict. They arrive at the party with their mood lifted, the new secret acknowledged but unexamined, and Scarlett’s MCAT anxieties still humming beneath the banter.
