Chapter 16
Contains spoilersOverview
In the wake of Victoria’s ankle injury, the team’s mood sours and Scarlett fixates on the loss it represents. During therapy, Sam challenges Scarlett to articulate her emotions and interrogates whether fear of injury truly drives her block. Scarlett rejects that fear, forcing a reckoning with a deeper, unnamed anxiety.
Summary
After Coach Sima carries a sobbing Victoria into the aquatic center, Scarlett can’t shake Bella’s mournful observation about Victoria’s new hair treatment, which comes to symbolize the abrupt derailment of Victoria’s hopes. Practices and the locker room feel subdued, and Scarlett ruminates on the fragility of a senior season.
In therapy, Sam asks for updates, and Scarlett explains that Victoria’s family is in town and details are vague. The possibility of a season-ending injury hangs over the team, especially for a diver like Victoria who relied on the hope of a better next year.
Sam pushes Scarlett to name her feelings. Scarlett identifies sadness for Victoria’s pain, anger that it happened, and anxiety about her recovery. Sam probes for fear, linking Scarlett’s own past injury to Victoria’s and asking whether diving’s dangers are the core issue.
Scarlett resists the premise, arguing that Victoria’s accident occurred outside the pool and that risks were always part of the sport. She states clearly that she does not dive in constant fear of being hurt, and Sam accepts that conclusion.
With fear of injury ruled out, Sam presses the crucial question: if not injury, what is Scarlett afraid of? The session ends with Scarlett confronted by the possibility that her block stems from a deeper, yet-unidentified fear.
