On a call, her mother Barb, an orthopedic surgeon, reinforces Scarlett’s medical ambitions. During preseason training, Scarlett’s fear at ten meters resurfaces; she performs a controlled headstand and nails an unassigned, familiar “emotional support” dive instead of the called dive.

Coach Sima praises the execution as NCAA-caliber but reprimands Scarlett for changing dives, insisting the problem is in her head and urging her to commit. He sends the team to his annual cookout. Scarlett arrives with Victoria and literally runs into Lukas Blomqvist. While Mrs. Sima quizzes Lukas about the Swedish Open, his world title, and the Olympics—and needles Pen’s past mistakes—Lukas coolly defends Pen’s injury recovery. Seeing his discomfort, Scarlett lies that Pen is looking for him to give him an exit.

Over dinner and Coach Sima’s home brew, team dynamics swirl: the synchronized-twin couples charm and bemuse, and Pen pulls Scarlett aside to the backyard swings. Tipsy and needing quiet, Pen and Scarlett joke about the twins, then Pen admits she and Lukas have broken up. Pen decides Lukas should drive her home and texts him.

Lukas approaches and offers to take Pen home. As the three converge, Pen, buoyed by alcohol and impulse, abruptly proposes that Scarlett and Lukas should have sex, jolting the moment and reframing their newly altered relationships.
