Chapter Forty-Four
Overview
Euyn’s group tracks Sora’s deliberately planted trail to The Mine, where Mikail uses a terrified father and daughter as bait to recon the gang’s numbers. A moral clash erupts, and Mikail exposes that Ty’s mission includes killing Sora, fracturing trust within the team. Aeri proposes an infiltration plan using herself and Ty as “bounties,” but Euyn’s rooftop vantage reveals the Mine is likely a trap, prompting Euyn to kill the bait before the assault begins.
Summary
Euyn and the others follow Sora’s trail through Oosant, finding repeated scraps of blue fabric from Sora’s dress leading toward the warehouse district and a building called The Mine. The group numbers seven, including a frightened bald man and a young woman Euyn does not recognize.
Mikail identifies the two strangers as “bait” and orders them to knock at The Mine, claim a king’s man questioned them, and return with an estimate of how many gang members are inside—threatening brutal consequences if they refuse. Euyn argues they should lure the gang out rather than storm a fortified building, but Ty objects to using and killing civilians, and Aeri quietly agrees there must be a better way.
The confrontation escalates until Mikail reveals a shocking truth to Aeri: Ty is in Oosant under orders to kill Sora. Aeri turns on Ty, and Mikail ends the dispute by forcing the bait to approach The Mine anyway, warning Ty he will be dealt with later. Euyn recognizes Mikail’s ruthless “demon” side has taken over and prepares for a deadly assault.
Aeri proposes an alternative: Mikail can bring Aeri (and Ty) inside by posing as bounty hunters delivering captives, allowing them to assess the interior before attacking. Mikail accepts, assigns Royo to circle around back, and orders Euyn to take a rooftop position across from The Mine to eliminate scouts; privately, Mikail tells Euyn to kill the bait quietly once inside.
Euyn takes position on an abandoned building’s roof and discovers there are no guards on The Mine’s rooftop at all. Realizing this likely means the gang has been alerted and the bait betrayed them, Euyn immediately fires two bolts, killing the father and daughter, and prepares for the fight to come.
