Chapter Nineteen
Overview
Stranded on the Sol River after the pirate attack, Aeri and Royo choose to spend the night on a tiny sandbar rather than risk a long detour on land. With no fire or shelter, the cold forces Royo to abandon his distance and hold Aeri close under a shared cloak. The night marks a shift from purely practical partnership toward reluctant intimacy and dependence.
Summary
Aeri and Royo drift down the Sol River in a stolen rowboat after the riverboat battle, and Aeri mourns the loss of her belongings while taking comfort in having her freedom, Royo’s protection, and diamonds in her bag. She watches Royo row for miles, unsettled by how easily he killed to protect her and how that competence affects her.
As darkness approaches, Royo points out an “isle” where they can stop, which turns out to be a tiny sandbar of slick rocks and sand. Aeri argues for going ashore to find help, but Royo insists the river is still their best chance: another boat from Umbria may recognize the burned-out vessel and rescue them, while taking the Northern Road would cost nearly a sunsae. Realizing the spymaster will not wait and fearing failure, Aeri agrees to try the sandbar for one night, with a promise to go ashore if no one comes tomorrow.
On the sandbar, they find no firewood and no shelter. Aeri produces a cloak from her bag and suggests they share it for warmth, but Royo refuses to “cuddle” and tries to endure the cold alone. Aeri, remembering past brushes with freezing and refusing to risk hypothermia, presses the issue until Royo reluctantly agrees to sleep back-to-back under the cloak.
The cold worsens, and Aeri’s shivering becomes violent, making it impossible to rest. Finally, Royo gives in and turns to pull Aeri against his chest, wrapping the cloak tightly around them. Though he acts reluctant and avoids her gaze, he holds her close enough for them to stay warm, and Aeri falls asleep surprised by the unfamiliar feeling of being saved—and wondering if Royo will return to being distant in the morning.
