Chapter Thirty-Eight
Overview
In a quiet nighttime carriage ride, Mikail and Sora trade hard truths about being made into “blades,” connecting over trauma while Euyn listens in. Sora reveals Rune warned that Tiyung’s true assignment may be to kill her, likely at Count Seok’s command, sharpening the group’s internal danger. Mikail rejects the idea of real freedom for people like them and affirms a vengeance-first worldview, while also admitting he is prepared to die to see their plans through.
Summary
Late at night on the Eastern Road, Mikail stays awake in the carriage because his wounds still ache too much to sleep, though his drug cravings have eased. He speaks quietly with Sora while Euyn pretends to sleep nearby, clearly listening.
Sora reveals she has partial hearing loss from Erlingnow poison, mentioning it with unsettling calm. Mikail recognizes the pain behind her casualness and admits he understands what it is to be “turned deadly,” while Sora reflects that love can soothe but also threaten—an observation that hits Mikail because of his feelings for Euyn.
When Mikail jokes about Tiyung, Sora matter-of-factly says Rune claimed Tiyung’s real mission is to kill her, likely ordered by Count Seok to control them both at the end. Sora asks Mikail whether freedom is possible for people like them, and Mikail answers honestly that powerful men will never leave them alone, so the best they can do is pursue the vengeance forced on them.
The conversation turns to unspoken grief. Mikail refuses to discuss his dead family, and Sora admits she also avoids naming someone she has lost. Mikail privately thinks of Kito and the guilt he carries, and Sora steadies him by touching his hand and telling him to let the burden rest.
Mikail offers to kill Tiyung, but Sora declines, saying Tiyung is not the real problem and that Seok is hers to deal with. Mikail says Sora will handle the person Mikail wants dead, while privately keeping his deeper aim secret: to destroy the crown and the dangerous belief in immortal kings.
They end by wondering whether peace comes after vengeance. Mikail doubts it but wants to find out, and he admits he is willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for their plan’s success, even as he tells Sora he wants her to live long.
