Chapter Fifty-Four
Overview
Aeri basks in Count Dal’s extravagant villa and fixates on what completing the assassination mission could buy: power, safety, and luxury. While Mikail and Euyn prepare for dinner and plan a stop at the armory, the timeline tightens when Euyn notes there are only three days until their fate with the crown is decided.
Behind the looming deadline—Dal arranging Sora’s access to King Joon—Aeri and Royo’s bond deepens as Aeri draws out Royo’s rare laughter and Royo admits he likes Aeri’s oddness, raising emotional stakes as the mission nears its end.
Summary
Aeri roams Count Dal’s lavish villa in Aseyo, marveling at its marble halls and a glass dome filled with rare trees and colorful birds. The opulence stirs Aeri’s ambition: completing the mission could buy Aeri a life of luxury, though Aeri also worries about appearances, lingering bloodstains on clothing, and when it will be safe to message Aeri’s father again.
Walking with Royo, Aeri reflects on trusting him despite past mistakes and on how protective care after his shoulder wound has drawn them closer. Aeri teases Royo and manages to make him laugh, savoring the rare moment his guarded demeanor softens and choosing to focus on the present rather than what happens after the mission ends.
Mikail and Euyn join them dressed for dinner, and Mikail immediately notices Royo’s laughter. The conversation turns to Euyn’s fate and the looming crown, with Royo joking about Euyn becoming the “thousandth-year king.” Euyn hesitates instead of confidently accepting the idea, then notes they will find out in three days.
The reminder unsettles Aeri: in three days, Count Dal is expected to bring Sora close enough to King Joon for Sora to kill him. Mikail announces a plan to stop by the armory before dinner to resupply, especially for Euyn’s bolts; Aeri asks for a dagger as well.
Back toward their suite, Aeri revels in the small victory of making Royo laugh. As Aeri dances down the hall, Royo calls Aeri strange but admits he likes it, leaving Aeri flustered and newly warmed by the confession.
