Kai wakes face-down in wet dirt and realizes he has been drugged and dumped in the Whispers for the first Trial. A leather band has been fused tightly around his forearm, and a Sight silently records him before signaling Kai to check his pocket. The note inside explains that the Trial will last six days and that contestants must collect the most bands by cutting them from one another, which makes Kai understand that the king has deliberately turned the event into a bloody hunt.

Because the heat and the drug’s aftereffects leave him weak and thirsty, Kai decides that finding water matters more than finding opponents. He climbs a towering pine despite his old fear of heights, spots a break in the trees that suggests a stream, and spends hours trekking toward it through dangerous forest terrain. As he moves, Kai recognizes the Whispers as the same brutal place where his father once trained him, which sharpens his anger at how carefully this Trial has been designed.

During the long walk, Kai’s thoughts drift to Paedyn, and his irritation only confirms how deeply she is affecting him. He finds a hidden sword hanging from a branch, later discovers a throwing star, and uses it to kill a rabbit for food. By evening he reaches a clean, man-made creek fed by Hydros, finds two canteens hidden nearby, and builds a fire so he can drink, rest, and cook.

Kai’s sensory ability then alerts him that someone is approaching, and Braxton emerges from the trees after following the smoke from Kai’s fire. Braxton wants Kai’s band, and Kai refuses because he intends to win the Trials, so the two men engage in a brutal hand-to-hand fight. Braxton nearly defeats Kai by trapping him beside the flames, forcing Kai’s chest into the fire, and reaching for Kai’s sword so he can cut off the band while Kai is stunned by pain.

The injury does not finish Kai. Using pain and adrenaline, Kai reverses the hold, throws Braxton into the flames, and gains the advantage long enough to slice Braxton’s band free. Kai spares Braxton’s life and orders him to leave, then acknowledges the Sight who recorded the fight before tending to his own wound with water and a strip torn from his shirt. The chapter ends with Kai badly burned but still determined to survive, prevent infection, and keep fighting for victory.
