Chapter 46
Overview
Kitt decides to defy his father’s sheltered view of the kingdom and asks Paedyn to take him to Loot, proving that her influence is changing how he thinks about ruling. By trusting Paedyn, he also unknowingly reveals the hidden tunnel system she has been desperate to find, including the route to Bowl Arena.
In Loot, Kitt directly witnesses the poverty, punishment, and harsh survival that define life for many of his people, and Paedyn shows him the place she once called home. The chapter deepens their emotional connection while sharpening the moral cost of Paedyn’s betrayal.
Summary
In Paedyn’s room, Adena excitedly shows off the nearly finished dress she is making for the final ball while Ellie admires it. Paedyn enjoys the brief lightness, but she is still preoccupied with finding the castle tunnels and knows Kitt is her only real lead. When Kitt unexpectedly arrives and asks to take Paedyn away from her friends, she quickly realizes he has come to talk about Loot.
In private, Kitt tells Paedyn he wants her to take him into the slums. He admits that her earlier arguments affected him and says he cannot become a good king without seeing how his people actually live. Paedyn encourages him while inwardly struggling with guilt, because Kitt’s trust is giving her exactly what she needs to help the Resistance. When Paedyn asks whether he trusts her, Kitt says yes, and she recognizes how deeply she is betraying him.
Kitt leads Paedyn into the castle dungeons and reveals that one of the hidden passages is concealed inside an unused prison cell. Paedyn carefully notes how he opens it: he slides a specific stone, uses a special key from the ring he keeps on his person, and unlocks a camouflaged door in the wall. As they move through the tunnel, Kitt casually explains the branching routes, including that one passage leads near the training grounds and another leads to Bowl Arena and the room beneath the interview box. Paedyn realizes with relief that she has finally found the exact tunnel she had been trying to locate.
After climbing out through the hidden trapdoor beneath the arena box, Paedyn and Kitt take a horse from the field beside the Bowl and ride to Loot in disguise. Once there, Kitt is overwhelmed by the stench, crowding, poverty, and improvisational survival all around him. Paedyn points out the desperate children who steal to live and explains that they are whipped when caught, then shows Kitt the bloody post where such punishments happen. Finally, she takes him to the makeshift shelter where she once slept, and Kitt responds with grief and apology, thanking her for showing him Loot and trusting him with the truth of her life, while Paedyn silently bears the weight of deceiving him.
