Chapter 12
Overview
At the contestants’ first royal dinner, Kai and Paedyn’s uneasy connection sharpens into an open mix of rivalry, sarcasm, and attraction. The king’s recognition of Paedyn’s father links her past to the palace, while Kai’s concern over her treatment and their private knife-point confrontation reveal that their relationship will be central to the coming Trials. By the end of the chapter, both have openly acknowledged each other as dangerous opponents.
Summary
From Kai’s point of view, the chapter begins at the formal dinner for the Purging Trials contestants. Kai is struck by the irony of Paedyn Gray’s presence: after saving his life in the slums, she has been rewarded with dangerous trials she never wanted. When Paedyn enters and sits across from him, she pointedly ignores him until Kai introduces himself, beginning a tense, teasing exchange that immediately establishes their mutual antagonism and fascination.
Once the king, queen, and Kitt arrive, the royal couple officially welcomes the contestants and urges them to prepare for the coming Trials. The king emphasizes training, while the queen reminds them about the social expectations surrounding the events. As dinner is served, Kai notices that Paedyn, Hera, and Ace are stunned by the abundance of food, likely because of their poverty in the slums. Realizing Paedyn may refuse to eat out of anger or pride, Kai deliberately heaps food onto her plate and goads her until she starts eating.
During the meal, the king asks about Paedyn saving Kai in the alley, drawing attention from the table. Kai and Paedyn trade sarcastic remarks, but the conversation turns more serious when the queen thanks Paedyn for helping Kai. The king then reveals that he knew Paedyn’s father, Adam Gray, because Adam used to assist palace physicians during fever season. This unsettles Paedyn, showing that her father had a closer connection to the palace than she expected.
After dinner, the king and queen dismiss the contestants and announce that training begins the next day. When an Imperial moves to escort Paedyn back to her room, Kai intervenes and takes over himself. As they walk through the palace, Paedyn challenges the idea that equal rooms mean equal chances in the Trials, since other contestants possess stronger, more combat-ready abilities. Kai silently acknowledges her disadvantage, while also remembering how capably she fought the Silencer and wondering if she is more dangerous than she appears.
Outside Paedyn’s door, Kai impulsively lifts her chin to inspect her split lip and taunts her fighting skill. Paedyn instantly retaliates, twisting his wrist, pinning him to the wall, and holding Kai’s own dagger to his throat. Their confrontation becomes both a threat and a test: Paedyn reveals that one of Kai’s Imperials caused her injury, and Kai quietly indicates that he intends to deal with that guard. When Paedyn insists that Kai’s identity does not matter because they are now competitors, Kai responds by drawing the hidden dagger from her waistband and pressing it to her throat, proving he can read her as well.
The standoff ends without violence, but it deepens their rivalry and attraction. Paedyn vows that she will be Kai’s undoing, and Kai answers that he looks forward to it. After they lower their blades, Kai wipes her bloodied dagger on his own shirt, turning the moment into one last taunt about royal blood. Paedyn retreats to her room, and Kai returns to his own, fixated on the blood on his neck and the realization that Paedyn may truly become both his greatest threat and his greatest obsession.
