Paedyn starts the morning in Loot Alley after a night of recurring nightmares about her father and Adena. While scanning the market, she notices that fewer Imperials are on duty than there should be, which unsettles her because she has memorized their patrol patterns. Hungry but alert, she begins stealing food and looks for an easy target.

Paedyn chooses a hurried young apprentice who has overpaid for black leather. She deliberately collides with him, steals a few coins, and then impulsively takes a folded note hidden in a secret pocket of his vest. When she slips into an alley and reads it, she learns that a meeting is set for quarter past midnight at the white house between Merchant and Elm, with instructions to bring supplies. Paedyn is shaken because the location is her former home, and she realizes the leather the apprentice bought may be connected to whatever is happening there.

As Paedyn returns to thieving, the chapter widens her history with Adena: for five years they have survived by dividing labor, with Paedyn stealing and Adena sewing. Paedyn is then forced to watch an Imperial whip a young boy who has been caught stealing. The sight reminds her of her own scars and of a past attempt to help another child that only earned both of them more punishment, so she stops herself from intervening.

Immediately afterward, Paedyn runs into a drunken Imperial who seizes the chance to harass and question her. When he demands proof that she is a Psychic, Paedyn studies the clues on his body and behavior and invents a reading about his failed marriage and infidelity. Her performance enrages him exactly as she expects, and he strikes her before dismissing her, allowing Paedyn to escape with both her safety and another stolen bundle of fabric.

On the walk back to meet Adena for lunch, Paedyn reflects on how easily she manipulated the Imperial and why her deductions worked. She then sees a large banner announcing the sixth Purging Trials and reacts with bitter contempt. To Paedyn, the Trials are not an honor but a spectacle built on propaganda and death, especially for weaker Elites, and her final thoughts underline both her hatred of the system and her grim relief that, as an Ordinary hiding in plain sight, she is outside that fate.
