Kai begins the chapter in the dungeons, where he has spent days torturing a captured Silencer named Micah. Despite Kai's training and brutality, Micah has yielded almost no useful information, which leaves Kai angry and frustrated as the first Trial draws near. Kai leaves the cell bloodied and heads straight to dinner.

At the table, Kai notices Paedyn's attention on the blood on his shirt and teases her when she seems briefly concerned. During the meal, Kai's mother announces the tradition that contestants must pair up for balls held before each Trial. That announcement sharpens Kai's awareness of both Kitt's interest in Paedyn and his own growing attraction to her, even though Paedyn has repeatedly framed their relationship as rivalry and enmity.

The next morning, Kai runs into Paedyn in the corridor outside their rooms. He pulls her into the kitchen before breakfast, where the two share easy banter with Gail, the cook who clearly knows Kai and Kitt well. Gail and Paedyn quickly warm to each other, and Kai enjoys watching Paedyn laugh while also showing her a gentler, more familiar side of himself. The scene ends with Kai stealing her an apple and Paedyn playfully polishing it on his shirt before calling him a gentleman.

On the training grounds, Kai and Kitt jog together in the oppressive heat and slip into a more serious conversation. Kitt admits, indirectly, that he resents being barred from the Purging Trials because he is the heir, while Kai reminds him that the kingdom needs its future king alive. After sparring, with Kitt briefly managing to throw him, Kai returns to knife practice and reflects again on the difference between their roles: Kitt is protected to rule, while Kai has been raised to fight, kill, and enforce.

Kai then turns his attention to Paedyn, who is striking a padded tree with worsening form. Recognizing that her sloppiness comes from exhaustion and frustration rather than lack of skill, he interrupts and critiques her technique. When Paedyn ignores him, Kai steps in physically, placing his hands on her hips and abdomen to correct her stance and teach her to drive punches with her whole body. Paedyn grudgingly follows the instruction, but the charged lesson ends with her suddenly turning and throwing a punch at Kai's face.
