Chapter 36
Overview
Paedyn uses her growing friendship with Kitt to push him toward sneaking out to Loot, hoping his trust will lead her to the castle’s secret exits and, ultimately, the tunnel the Resistance needs. Kitt admits that hidden ways out exist, showing Paedyn that her plan may work, even as her guilt over deceiving him deepens.
The chapter also sharpens Paedyn’s conflict with the royal family when the king privately belittles her, warns her away from his sons, and tries to remind her of her place. By the end, Paedyn enters preparations for the next ball with her resolve hardened and her feelings for Kai still dangerously unresolved.
Summary
In the palace kitchen, Paedyn and Kitt spend time joking together while trying to catch chocolates, and Paedyn is struck again by how kind and attentive he is. Their easy companionship shows how much their political partnership has turned into a real friendship, which makes Paedyn feel increasingly guilty because she is still using that closeness to search for the tunnel the Resistance needs.
Once they leave the kitchen, Paedyn steers the conversation toward Kitt’s frustration with palace life. She encourages him to visit Loot so he can see how his people actually live, then pushes further by asking whether there is an unguarded way out of the castle. Kitt admits there are several ways for him to leave unseen, exactly the opening Paedyn wanted, and although he does not commit, he says he will think about her offer to take him into the city.
The king interrupts them, sends Kitt away, and then confronts Paedyn alone. He reminds Paedyn that Kai helped her survive the first Trial, mocks her public image and ranking in the polls, and warns her to stay away from both of his sons so she cannot influence or damage them. Paedyn hides her hatred for the man who killed her father, answers submissively, and leaves the exchange more determined than ever to win.
Later, Paedyn prepares for the next ball with Adena and Ellie. Ellie finishes Paedyn’s makeup while Adena laces her into a striking red gown with a slit that leaves Paedyn’s father’s dagger visible. As Paedyn admires the finished look, Adena teases her about Kai, and Paedyn reluctantly admits that she finds him both confusing and captivating. The scene ends when Lenny arrives and jokes that Paedyn finally looks like a princess.
