Chapter 60
Overview
In the aftermath of Adena’s death, Kai watches Paedyn break apart with grief and tries to reach her while Blair is celebrated for winning the Trial. The moment is shattered when the Resistance launches a coordinated attack on the arena, traps the crowd, and takes the royal box hostage. Kai realizes the attackers are using Silencers or other Fatals to suppress the powers of the king, queen, Kitt, and finally Kai himself, turning a personal tragedy into a direct strike against the monarchy.
Summary
Kai stands frozen in shock as he realizes the person killed in the arena is Adena, not a criminal he recognizes from the Trials. He watches Paedyn collapse into the sand with Adena’s body in her arms, and Paedyn’s raw grief makes clear how deeply she loved her friend. Seeing Paedyn shattered leaves Kai wanting to comfort her, even though he feels unskilled at helping pain instead of causing it.
Around them, the crowd celebrates Blair’s killing of Adena as the act that wins the Trial. Blair steps into the circle, pleased with herself, while the arena treats the murder as spectacle and victory. Kai moves toward Paedyn, focused only on reaching her as she sobs over Adena’s body.
Before Kai can get to Paedyn, the mood in the arena abruptly changes. The cheering turns into screams when an Imperial arrives with the news that attackers came through the tunnels and entered the box. Kai looks up and sees black-masked figures blocking the exits, trapping the audience in the stands while the Mute prevents them from using their powers.
Kai then spots the true target of the assault: the royal box. Resistance members have surrounded the king, queen, and Kitt, with one man holding a knife to the king’s throat. The captors appear calm rather than desperate, which leads Kai to understand that they are Silencers, and possibly other Fatals, because otherwise the royals would have fought back with their abilities.
Recognizing the strain on the faces of those being suppressed, Kai understands exactly what is happening because he has endured that kind of power-nullifying agony himself. The chapter ends as he realizes the Resistance has not only seized the royal family but is now smothering his power too. What began as Paedyn’s personal loss becomes a wider political attack that changes the stakes far beyond the Trial.
