Kai arrives at the Bowl for the final Purging Trial and immediately realizes how different this round is from the earlier ones. Instead of being drugged and taken somewhere unknown, the contestants are brought before a roaring public audience, which turns the Trial into a spectacle as well as a competition. Kai also notes that he had no chance to speak with Paedyn before being escorted out, leaving their tension unresolved as the Trial begins.

When the contestants are led to the rail overlooking the Pit, Kai sees that the entire arena floor has been transformed into a vast hedge maze. The king addresses the competitors from the royal glass box while Kitt watches from beside him and silently wishes Kai luck. At first the challenge seems straightforward, but the king quickly reveals that the maze is not fixed.

As the hedges begin to shift and reform, Kai realizes that Blooms stationed around the arena are controlling the maze in real time. The king explains the rules: to improve their chances of winning the Purging Trials, the contestants must be the first to reach the center of the maze. He then raises the stakes further by announcing that the winner must also kill the person waiting there, a prisoner condemned for crimes against the kingdom.

Kai understands that the Trial is designed not only to test the contestants but also to entertain the crowd with a guaranteed execution. The Imperials then separate the contestants and lead each one to a different maze entrance. Before entering, Kai finds Paedyn across the arena, shares a private smile with her, and repeats their familiar flicking gesture. Paedyn returns the gesture and disappears into the maze, ending the chapter with Kai and Paedyn sent into the shifting labyrinth from opposite sides.
