On the final day in the Whispers, Kai and Paedyn receive a brief note from a Sight ordering them to meet at the forest's edge at sunrise. They spend the rest of the day pushing through the woods, trading dry remarks as exhaustion and tension build. In the dark, they hear approaching voices and discover Jax and Andy, whose arrival reassures Kai even as Paedyn stays cautious around them.

As the four continue through the night, Jax and Andy explain how they survived the Trial. Jax hid alone at first, escaped Blair, later joined Andy, and helped defeat Braxton and Ace after noticing Ace was already weakened. Andy says Blair stole her band, but she later took Hera's after fighting an invisible attacker in the night. Kai and Paedyn then describe their own week in the forest, including Sadie's death, bringing the others up to date before they fall into uneasy silence.

At dawn, they reach the tree line and find a crowd gathered beyond the forest, with Sights ready to record the finale. Blair steps out first and mocks their alliance, Braxton appears moments later, and Hera attacks from invisibility. Andy shifts into her wolf form to track Hera, while Paedyn and Andy engage Blair and Braxton. Seeing Ace watching from a distance, Kai chooses him as his target and breaks away to finish their conflict himself.

Kai uses the abilities around him against Ace, turning invisible, Blinking, and finally using Telekinesis to overpower him. Ace fights back with illusions and a spear, wounding Kai and forcing him to separate what is real from what is not. When Kai nearly crushes Ace's throat, Ace exploits Kai's feelings by making him see Paedyn grievously wounded and begging for help. The illusion breaks Kai's focus, lets Ace counterattack, and gives Ace the chance to mock Kai for caring about Paedyn. Jax saves Kai from immediate death by throwing him an arrow, allowing Kai to wound Ace and regain his footing.

Ace then multiplies himself again and taunts Kai with threats against Paedyn, driving Kai from controlled violence into rage. When only one Ace remains visible, Kai throws his star straight into the figure's chest, believing he has finally killed him. But as the illusion dissolves, Kai realizes the body in front of him is not Ace at all. He has fatally struck Jax, and the chapter ends with Kai recognizing in horror that he has killed his own brother.
