In Tyn’s tent after the highstorm, Shallan reads spanreed reports suggesting Highprince Valam may be dead and Jah Keved is sliding toward a succession struggle. Tyn sees opportunity and proposes traveling there after reaching the Shattered Plains. She also reveals bounties on Vathah and the deserters, intending to turn them in despite Shallan’s promises.

Tyn lectures that a con cannot become reality, pressing Shallan to abandon her commitments. The spanreed then confirms the Ghostbloods are pleased with the Amydlatn operation and that the Wind’s Pleasure was lost with all hands—Jasnah Kholin presumed dead. Further lines expose that Jasnah had taken a new ward named Shallan. Realizing the truth, Tyn attacks Shallan, demanding to know if Jasnah survived.

Pinned and gasping, Shallan panics but resolves to fight. She pushes Stormlight to distract Tyn with a fleeting projection, then, as Tyn advances to kill her, summons a Shardblade and fatally strikes Tyn. Vathah, Gaz, Red, and others—spurred by Pattern’s warning—force their way in after slaying Tyn’s soldiers. Shallan orders them to search the tent for records of who hired Tyn and commands secrecy about the Shardblade.

Resuming the spanreed exchange, Shallan learns the Ghostbloods want a meeting in the warcamps and are researching a city, which she connects to Urithiru. Recognizing their involvement in Jasnah’s assassination and threats to her family, Shallan nonetheless replies “Yes,” choosing to meet them while asserting authority over the camp and reaffirming protection for Vathah’s men.
