Epilogue: Art and Expectation
Contains spoilersOverview
Wit muses on art and expectation before Jasnah Elsecalls back from Shadesmar, battered but alive. He confirms the Everstorm’s arrival, Urithiru’s discovery, and the Knights’ rebirth under her former ward. Realizing past records may no longer apply, Jasnah and Wit resolve to act, placing hope in people rather than prophecy.
Summary
At night in a remote, hilly landscape, Wit performs for an audience of small creatures and reflects on art and expectation. He illustrates how perception defines value with an anecdote about a farmer and a misplaced masterpiece, concluding that managing anticipation is the core of artistic success. Sensing an arrival, he readies himself.
A shimmering ring opens and Jasnah Kholin appears, burned, travel-worn, and armed. She tests Wit with a summoned Shardblade and demands answers. Unmoved, Wit reveals that the Everstorm has already come, Urithiru has been found, and the Knights Radiant have begun to reform—led in part by her former apprentice.
They set out on foot toward civilization. Jasnah explains her hasty escape from the other side and focuses on salvaging what she can. Wit warns that the storm will strike Shinovar that night and spread across Roshar, transforming the parshmen as it passes.
Jasnah notes the pattern diverges from ancient precedent, casting doubt on her sources and previous assumptions. They agree that neither old records nor divinity will provide a script to follow. Wit distinguishes Tanavast from any true God and argues that salvation lies within people; Jasnah, pragmatically aligned, accepts the outlook as they continue into the night.
