Kaladin, trapped in bleak thoughts in his cell, is abruptly released with a royal pardon and without loss of rank. He resolves never to be caged again. Outside, he learns Adolin voluntarily locked himself in a nearby cell until Kaladin’s release, an act of solidarity that surprises and steadies Kaladin. The two reconcile, and Adolin pointedly admits he believes Kaladin’s accusations about Amaram.

Bridge Four crowd the jail antechamber to cheer Kaladin. Adolin announces he has won multiple sets of Shards and offers Kaladin a Blade and Plate. The gift triggers Kaladin’s revulsion—memories of loved ones slain by Shardbearers—and he refuses. Adolin argues the practicality, especially against the Assassin in White, but Kaladin insists the equipment will be more useful on one of his men.

Kaladin names Moash as the recipient. After a tense aside, Adolin relents. Moash lifts the silvery Blade, gloryspren swirling, and eagerly dons the orange Plate while the others react in awe. Rock calls everyone to a long-simmering celebratory stew; Dalinar watches Kaladin pensively from a distance. Teft reports the crew considered breaking Kaladin out but he dissuaded them, and notes rising anger about Amaram.

Staying behind, Kaladin helps Moash with the armor and reveals he has decided to support Moash’s friends’ plan, agreeing to do what is needed to accomplish their task. Moash, elated and empowered by the Shards, vows to train and hints that Amaram might deserve the same treatment afterward. Kaladin then returns to rejoin Bridge Four’s celebration.
