Summary
Dalinar insists Kaladin and Bridge Four learn to ride so they can respond faster and protect Kholin heirs in the field. Stablemaster Jenet delivers exacting instruction, while Adolin’s teasing earns her thrown rocks. Kaladin reluctantly mounts a placid horse, Spray, finding the experience awkward but manageable.
While practicing, Kaladin questions Natam about the failed assassination of King Elhokar. A conversation with Syl helps Kaladin realize the balcony’s railing—clearly cut—must have been sabotaged after the highstorm, narrowing the window for the crime. Determined to improve battlefield mobility, Kaladin eyes a fiercer horse, Dreamstorm.
Against warnings, Kaladin uses Stormlight to stick himself to Dreamstorm’s saddle and endures a brutal bucking before being thrown when his Stormlight fades. Dalinar, impressed yet cautious, orders daily riding practice for selected men and approves Kaladin’s plan for mounted patrols in two weeks, though he forbids using Dreamstorm.
Kaladin resumes training and further questions Natam, learning that after Kaladin left the king’s rooms, Moash briefly stepped onto the balcony. Kaladin notes the detail but sets aside suspicion. Spotting Amaram speaking amiably with Dalinar and his sons reignites Kaladin’s hatred, and he looks forward to getting his squad out on patrol.
