Seeking stability and comfort for the journey, Shallan negotiates with caravan owner Macob and guard captain Tyn. She offers protection via her newly won deserters in exchange for joining forces and proper conveyance to the Shattered Plains. Macob agrees, acknowledging Shallan’s authority, and asks that Tvlakv and Tag remain at the rear as a highstorm approaches.

Vathah confronts Shallan, shaken by guilt and terrified of being hanged if they return to civilization. He seizes her arm, accusing her of appearing as a queen at night and a child by day. Pattern’s calm warning makes Vathah release her, but Shallan notes his volatility and the risk he poses.

Turning to Tvlakv, Shallan rejects his claim that Bluth colluded with the deserters. She asserts payment for her rescue by taking Tvlakv’s five slaves, demands their writs, and offers the freed men wages—with or without debt repayment. She purchases a spare wagon while Tvlakv refuses to travel to the Shattered Plains.

As bodies burn, caravan survivors present a prayer of thanks to the former deserters. Witnessed by families and children, the men burn the prayer and stand taller, their shame tempered by gratitude. Shallan’s growing authority, new servants, and the merged caravan set a steadier course toward the Shattered Plains.
