Overview

Kaladin systematically tests his Stormlight abilities with Sigzil, Rock, and Lopen, discovering tactical uses for binding objects and retrieving some invested Light. After debating how to reveal his powers, he resolves to proceed carefully.

Returning to camp, he finds Dalinar welcoming Highlord Amaram as a celebrated ally—Kaladin’s secret betrayer—sharply escalating personal and political tensions and closing Part One.

Summary

In the chasms, Kaladin experiments with Stormlight by infusing a stone to adhere to the wall while Sigzil times the effect. Rock alone can see tiny purple spren at work, while Lopen volunteers to be stuck to the wall, confirming Kaladin can bind people and objects. Sigzil struggles with rigorous measurement, but the team continues testing.

Kaladin then spars with Rock, Sigzil, and Lopen, using Stormlight to stick spears together, glue feet to the ground, and pin opponents to walls and floor. Rock proves formidable—wielding a log and wrestling—yet Kaladin wins by binding him to the ground and even draws back some of the invested Light. Kaladin concludes he must master these powers through extensive practice.

Teft arrives and suggests leadership roles for training the new recruits, noting Rock’s influence. In a guarded conversation, Teft warns that refounding the Knights Radiant will draw hatred because of their perceived ancient betrayal. Prompted by Syl and duty, Kaladin accepts that revealing himself will be difficult but inevitable, and he plans to proceed cautiously.

Climbing out of the chasms, Kaladin is saluted by darkeyed soldiers and hears of a heroic visitor supporting Dalinar. He rushes to the command complex and witnesses Dalinar warmly greeting Highlord Amaram, who brandishes a Shardblade claimed from an assassin. Kaladin recognizes Amaram as the lighteyes who stole his Blade, branded him, and sold him into slavery, setting up a profound confrontation as Part One ends.
