Summary
Kaladin descends a new, sturdy rope ladder into an untouched chasm to lead training, reflecting on the graves made by past battles. Teft gathers forty former bridgemen—two from each crew—to shape them into sergeants, projecting authority that reassures Kaladin. Gloryspren appear as Kaladin recognizes Teft’s leadership, while Syl playfully needles him.
Walking deeper, Kaladin and Syl banter about “natural laws,” then turn to serious matters: Dalinar’s goal to refound the Knights Radiant and the mysterious glyphs in Dalinar’s rooms. Syl reports glimpsing dangerous spren like red lightning and says the warnings of danger are true.
They explore wider chasm spaces and pools, Syl struggling with fragmented memories of another place of “living lights.” In the dim, amid bones and debris, Kaladin’s memories of bridgeman slaughter surge. A violet-glowing pool draws his attention, and Syl—momentarily seeming different—confides that other spren are trying to reclaim what was lost, though she alone came as an honorspren.
Syl reveals she defied the Stormfather to find Kaladin and insists they are needed. She urges Kaladin to become what Dalinar seeks. He fears losing Syl and claims he is broken, but she cites his heroism after Sadeas’s betrayal. Kaladin promises, “I’ll try.”
Rock arrives, and Kaladin fishes out an amethyst broam from the pool, joking it would be riches for bridgemen. Rock vows to use it to improve rations and playfully proposes a shrine to Syl. Kaladin’s marked practice ground has drawn the recruits out of their shells, validating the chasm visit as initiation. Rock relays that Sigzil is ready; Kaladin agrees to begin practicing his abilities there.
