Chapter Forty-One
Overview
Hunt and Bryce investigate the Rose Gate area and discover that the city's sewer system—not ley lines—may be the kristallos demon's hidden pathway, potentially controlled by Sabine. They plan to visit Hunt's Many Waters contact for further leads. The chapter deepens their growing bond as Hunt admits he's having fun with Bryce, and a playful exchange over Bryce's childhood toy collection reveals her vulnerable backstory of seeking acceptance as a half-Fae outcast.
Summary
As rain continues to pound Lunathion, Hunt and Bryce prepare to investigate the kristallos demon sightings near FiRo. Bryce first attempts to drag a terrified Syrinx out into the rain, but the chimera clings to the gallery carpet. Hunt uses his wind abilities to float Syrinx into his arms, and then flies Bryce and the chimera home through the storm. Bryce changes into athletic gear while Syrinx is fed and forgiven.
At the Rose Gate, Hunt and Bryce examine the area where surveillance footage captured a blur of the kristallos. Hunt realizes that the demon's appearances near major streets may not be due to ley lines but rather to the sewer system running beneath them—the perfect hidden route for the kristallos to move unseen, and for Sabine to summon and direct it. They open a sewer grate and peer into the tunnels below. Despite the stench, Bryce pushes to go down, but Hunt refuses without more weapons, noting that his lightning would be dangerous around water, and that Sabine is a lethal opponent even without the demon. He has already messaged Isaiah and Viktoria to set up extra cameras on the Gate and sewer grate.
Hunt suggests that his Many Waters contact at the docks might have useful information, since all sewers drain into the Istros River. Bryce wants to go immediately, but Hunt insists on waiting until daylight for safety. Before they leave, Hunt admits he's been having fun with Bryce despite the grim circumstances—something he hasn't experienced in a long time. Bryce deflects with humor, and Hunt snaps a photo of her looking bedraggled.
Back at Bryce's apartment, both shower to wash off the grime. While searching the linen closet for soap, Hunt discovers a box of Bryce's childhood Starlight Fancy toy horses. Bryce catches him and explains their significance: as a half-Fae child treated as a freak, owning the coveted Jelly Jubilee unicorn-pegasus—which her mother traveled hours to buy—was the first thing that helped her gain acceptance from other kids. Hunt is visibly touched and promises never to laugh at them. The scene ends with playful, flirtatious banter as Bryce teases Hunt about snooping, and both retreat to finish getting cleaned up.
