A flashback reveals the origin of this secret. Years earlier, during a failed animal-smuggling rescue mission, Bryce and Danika were captured by asp shifters after their motorcycle was shot out. With Danika wounded and a gun pointed at her face, Bryce unleashed her hidden starlight for the first time in front of anyone outside her family—blinding the asp shifters and killing all three with their own gun. Danika, the only person Bryce ever chose to trust with this secret, responded not with terror but with wonder and love.

The narrative reveals that Bryce's starlight is the pure light of a star from another world, the ancient gift of the Starborn Fae reborn.
