Chapter Eighty-One
Overview
As the Godslayer bullet warps time itself, Bryce retrieves Danika's hidden sword and cleaves Micah's body in half, then dismembers and incinerates his remains to ensure no resurrection is possible. Hypaxia reveals the liquid Bryce drank was not just venom but a full synth antidote, leaving Bryce lucid and in control throughout. The entire Summit watches in stunned silence as Bryce, blood-splattered and defiant, vacuums away the last ashes of the Archangel—an act of absolute finality broadcast to the world.
Summary
The death of Archangel Micah warps time and space itself. Hunt, still pinned against the wall at the Summit, perceives everything in agonizing slow motion—the shock on every face, Sandriel's outrage, Pollux's disbelief, Ruhn's terror—as the Godslayer bullet continues burrowing through Micah's skull, dragging time in its wake.
Bryce appears at the blown-out window of Jesiba's office wielding Danika's sword, which Danika had apparently left in the gallery on her last day alive and which Bryce had hidden in the office for two years. Bryce leaps from the window and drives the sword down through Micah's body, cleaving him in half as she falls. In the warped timestream, Micah's blood rises like ruby bubbles, showering Bryce's face and filling her screaming mouth. The synth heals her broken calf and every wound even as she lands. Sabine, watching from the Summit, visibly recoils at the sight of the missing Fendyr heirloom sword.
Hunt braces for the synth's madness to overtake Bryce, but her eyes remain clear and sharp with cold vengeance. Hypaxia reveals she figured out how to stabilize the venom antidote remotely and sent that to Bryce instead of just the venom—the liquid Bryce drank was the cure. The antidote destroys the synth in Bryce's system, leaving her lucid and in control. Hunt silently acknowledges that Bryce is the only person who has ever truly mattered to him.
With deliberate calm, Bryce hacks Micah's corpse apart with additional sword strikes, then retrieves a gallon of gasoline from a supply closet and douses the dismembered remains. She strikes a match and sets the body ablaze while fireproofing enchantments protect the surrounding art. As time snaps back to normal speed, the flames consume Micah entirely, reducing his wings to cinders and his body to ash.
Bryce lifts her blood-splattered face to the camera, staring directly at the watching world—vengeance incarnate. When the Auxiliary finally arrives outside, Bryce slams the front door shut, takes out a vacuum cleaner, and erases the last trace of Micah from existence. No one at the Summit, not even Sandriel, utters a word.
