Chapter Thirty-One
Overview
Bryce rescues Hunt from a dangerous frozen standoff with Sandriel by playing the vapid party girl, snapping selfies and steering him away. Micah confronts them but is satisfied by Isaiah and Hunt's cover story, then shocks everyone by asking Bryce to dinner—which she flatly rejects. Hunt flies Bryce home, warning her that Sandriel and Pollux are threats she may now face, while Bryce refuses to accompany him to the Oracle the next day.
Summary
As Sandriel turns toward them in the Comitium lobby, Hunt freezes between rage and terror. Isaiah urges them to kneel, noting that Sandriel's dreaded Second, Pollux (the Hammer), is not with her. Hunt refuses to kneel, paralyzed by the sight of Sandriel, who closely resembles her dead twin sister Shahar. Bryce intervenes by pulling out her new phone and loudly snapping selfies with the two Archangels in the background, playing the role of a vapid, star-struck party girl. She loops her arm through Hunt's, turning them both toward the elevators and giving him an escape from the confrontation.
Micah blocks their path at the elevator bank and demands an explanation. Hunt and Isaiah cover for the visit, claiming Hunt needed supplies and couldn't leave Bryce unprotected. Micah studies Bryce carefully and then asks her to dinner. Bryce flatly refuses—"Not interested"—as the elevator doors close, leaving the Archangel of Valbara rejected in front of everyone.
In the elevator, Hunt redirects them to a landing platform on an upper floor, warning Bryce that Sandriel's Second, Pollux, is even worse than Sandriel and should be avoided at all costs. He reflects that Sandriel is capable of petty revenge and likely won't forget Bryce's face. Hunt picks Bryce up and flies her from the launch balcony, carrying her over the Central Business District. He surveys the city—Luna's Temple, the Oracle's Temple (his destination tomorrow), Five Roses, Moonwood—and reflects on how much better Crescent City is compared to the human districts in Pangera, where cities are essentially pens for Vanir to exploit humans.
During the flight, Hunt asks Bryce why she lives in the Old Square. She explains it's one of the few safe places for a half-breed like her, close to work and amenities. He lands on her rooftop and asks if she meant her refusal to Micah. Bryce insists she did, launching into a sharp rant about the assumption that a pretty, single woman must be desperate for a powerful male's attention. Hunt acknowledges she has a chip on her shoulder, and Bryce smirks. He then asks if she'll accompany him to the Oracle tomorrow, but Bryce refuses with a wicked smile, telling him he'll have to face the Oracle alone.
