Chapter Twenty-One
Overview
Ruhn reveals to Bryce and Hunt that the Autumn King has tasked him with finding Luna's Horn, a broken Fae artifact stolen from the temple two years ago. He connects the Horn to the kristallos—a demon bred by the Prince of the Pit to hunt it—which Bryce recognizes as the creature that attacked her two years prior. The trio theorizes the murders are linked to someone using the kristallos to search for the Horn, and they agree to work together using Ruhn's Starborn ability to sense it. Hunt begins coordinating with the 33rd Legion for support.
Summary
Ruhn Danaan waits cloaked in shadows inside Luna's Temple for Bryce, who arrives with Hunt in tow despite Ruhn's request to meet alone. Using his shadow powers, Ruhn conceals all three from the tourists milling about the camera-free temple. Bryce and Hunt needle Ruhn with exaggerated claims of being best friends, but Ruhn presses forward with the real reason he called the meeting: the Autumn King has tasked him with finding Luna's Horn, a legendary artifact stolen from the temple two years ago.
Ruhn explains the Horn's history. It was forged by the Fae in their home world and wielded by Pelias, the first Starborn Prince, during the First Wars against the demon hordes. Pelias used the Horn's power to seal the Northern Rift and banish the Prince of the Pit and his armies back to Hel, but the Horn cracked in the process and lost its power. Despite centuries of attempts, no one could restore it, and it was eventually placed as an honorary relic in Luna's Temple. Ruhn then reveals a crucial discovery from the Fae Archives: the Prince of the Pit—the Star-Eater—once bred a demon called the kristallos specifically to hunt the Horn, using Pelias's own spilled blood mixed with dark essence. He shows Bryce an illustration of the creature, and she immediately recognizes it as the demon that attacked her and the angel in the alley two years ago.
The three piece together a theory: someone may be summoning the kristallos to track down the Horn again, and the recent murders may be connected to this search. Hunt observes that the kristallos's presence in Lunathion suggests the Horn is still within the city. Ruhn admits the Autumn King believes Ruhn's Starborn bloodline—descended from Pelias—gives him a preternatural ability to sense the Horn, which Ruhn partially confirmed when a book about the Horn seemed to call to him in the Archives. Bryce and Hunt realize this gives them a dual approach: find the demon to find the summoner, or find the Horn to lure the demon and its master.
After the meeting, Hunt steps outside to make calls. He phones Justinian Gelos, a fellow angel of the 33rd Legion, asking him to search databases for information on the kristallos. Justinian teases Hunt about working with Bryce and pushes him about moving on from Shahar, who died two centuries ago, but Hunt shuts the conversation down. Hunt reflects on needing to inform Isaiah and Micah about the Horn's possible connection to the case, and dreads having to work with Ruhn going forward.
