Chapter Four
Overview
Bryce endures a miserable date with Reid at an elite restaurant, suffering both his lateness and disinterest, before dumping him publicly and insulting a sneering Fae noblewoman on her way out. She texts Connor agreeing to a date on Saturday, marking a significant shift in her romantic life. The chapter provides extensive worldbuilding about Midgard's Vanir-dominated society, the Pangeran war, and the House system, while introducing Fury Axtar and Juniper as key members of Bryce's inner circle as they prepare for a night at the White Raven club.
Summary
Bryce arrives at the upscale Pearl and Rose restaurant for her date with Reid Redner, who is forty-five minutes late without calling. While waiting, she endures sneering from wealthy Vanir patrons who look down on her as a half-breed. She reads and rereads text messages from Connor, who confesses he's been crazy about her for a long time and asks for just one date. The messages stir her emotions, but she shoves her phone away when Reid finally arrives.
Reid is distracted, dismissive, and glued to his phone. When Bryce tries to discuss the Pangeran conflict—a decades-long war between human resisters and the Asteri's forces across the Haldren Sea—he shuts her down. Throughout dinner, he barely acknowledges her. When the pretentious first course arrives, Bryce decides she's had enough and announces she's leaving. Reid barely registers it at first. On her way out, Bryce confronts a sneering Fae noblewoman who propositions her for a gold mark, delivering a cutting insult before striding out with the stolen wine bottle, flipping off the hostess.
Outside, Bryce calls her friends Fury Axtar, a mysterious and lethal mercenary, and Juniper, a faun dancer, to meet her at the White Raven nightclub. While waiting, she texts Connor and agrees to a pizza date on Saturday, making it clear she's dumped Reid. Connor is overjoyed but careful not to be overbearing. Danika is furious at being left out of the Raven outing but stays loyal to her Pack Night obligations, especially with Briggs now free and the pack potentially at risk.
The chapter weaves in extensive worldbuilding: the Vanir conquered Midgard during the Crossing over fifteen thousand years ago; humans exist as near-slaves in much of the world, with some limited rights granted in recent centuries; the Asteri rule through an Imperial Senate; Crescent City is a melting pot but still deeply hierarchical. Bryce reflects on the SPQM slave tattoos, the House system, and the dominance politics of the wolf packs. Fury arrives at the Raven, catching Bryce off guard with a knife to her throat as a lesson about staying alert, and warns Bryce away from a new party drug called Synth. The two prepare to head into the club with mirthroot and Fury's own recreational powder, ready for a night out.
