Chapter Thirty-Three
Overview
Hunt consults the Oracle—a sphinx—about Luna's Horn and learns its true purpose: it can both close and open doorways between worlds, and someone wants to use it to reopen the Northern Rift. The Oracle reveals the Horn can be repaired despite Fae legends, though the method and the person behind the plot remain veiled. She addresses Hunt by his forgotten birth name, Orion Athalar, and issues an ominous warning to stay away from Bryce Quinlan.
Summary
Hunt visits the Oracle's temple to ask about Luna's Horn while Bryce and Ruhn wait outside—Bryce having refused to enter the park surrounding the temple. The Oracle is a sphinx, a rare and ancient being in service to the gods, whose beauty and power Hunt finds both alluring and unsettling. He asks his question carefully: not who took the Horn, since the Oracle refused to answer that two years ago, but why someone wants it.
The Oracle inhales the sulfuric fumes rising from the pit and delivers her answer: someone wants Luna's Horn to reopen the Northern Rift—the doorway between worlds. The Horn's power works in both directions; it can close or open doors depending on the bearer's intent. When Hunt points out the Horn is broken, the Oracle reveals it can be healed, contradicting Fae legends that say otherwise. However, she cannot see how to repair it, saying that knowledge is "veiled." She also cannot identify who wants to use it, calling that veiled as well.
The Oracle then addresses Hunt by his birth name, Orion Athalar—a name no one has spoken in two hundred years, the name his mother gave him. She offers to share a vision of his future, but Hunt declines. She pivots, asking whether he wants to know what she saw for Bryce Quinlan when Bryce visited twelve years ago. Hunt firmly refuses, insisting it's Bryce's private business. His protectiveness catches the Oracle's attention; she tells him he reminds her of "that which was lost long ago" and that she hadn't realized it might appear again.
The Oracle dismisses Hunt, but delivers a final warning: he should keep well away from Bryce Quinlan.
