Chapter Eighty-Eight
Overview
Bryce's starlight seals the Heart Gate but reveals her true Starborn nature to the world, prompting the Autumn King's fury and Ruhn's emotional reckoning with her lifelong sacrifice. Hunt realizes the Horn can only be wielded by a true Starborn heir—making Bryce both indispensable and a mortal threat to the Asteri. When Sandriel reports Bryce's power to the Asteri, ensuring they will move to kill her, Queen Hypaxia secretly dissolves Hunt's enslaving halo, setting him free to act.
Summary
Bryce channels her starlight through the Horn and into the Heart Gate, unleashing a blast of white light that blinds and scatters demons across the Old Square. The explosion of power reveals to everyone watching—including Hunt, Ruhn, Jesiba, Fury, the Autumn King, and Sandriel—that Bryce is truly Starborn, possessing light of a magnitude unseen since the First Wars. When the flare dims, the void within the Heart Gate has been sealed, though six other Gates in the city remain open. Bryce collapses against the archway, utterly drained.
The Autumn King, watching from the conference room, immediately calls Ember Quinlan in a fury, demanding to know why she concealed Bryce's Starborn nature for over twenty years. Ember reveals that when Bryce was a child, the king's goons seized her, and Bryce's starlight blinded them—answering the old riddle about what blinds an Oracle. Ember explains that when thirteen-year-old Bryce visited her father and met Ruhn, she saw that Ruhn's identity and self-worth rested on being the Chosen One. Bryce chose to hide her own power so as not to take that from him, loving Ruhn more than she hated the Autumn King. The revelation devastates Ruhn, who realizes Bryce's sacrifice and deception were rooted in love for him.
Hunt pieces together the full truth: Danika tattooed the Horn on Bryce knowing only a true Starborn heir could wield it. Micah had believed synth and Bryce's bloodline alone would suffice, but the Horn only functioned because Bryce is the genuine Starborn heir—object and wielder fused into one. This means Bryce can open portals to any world, a power that directly threatens the Asteri's sovereignty.
Sandriel reveals she has already contacted the Asteri to inform them about Bryce's powers and the Horn. Ruhn protests that Bryce is the only one who can seal the remaining Gates, but Sandriel dismisses this, noting Bryce hasn't made the Drop and appears too drained to close any more Gates. Hunt realizes the Asteri will move to kill Bryce. As his rage builds, Queen Hypaxia quietly channels her magic into Hunt, targeting the halo's enslaving spell on his brow. When Hunt rises to his feet, Hypaxia's magic dissolves the halo, freeing him as he fixes his gaze on Sandriel.
