Chapter 8
Overview
After a failed double date, Daphne ends up alone with Miles, who whisks her away to Big Louie's Drive-In to expand her northern Michigan horizons. Their easy banter deepens into glimpses of their differing coping styles—her scheduled misery versus his determined steadiness—revealing genuine compatibility beneath the fake-dating arrangement. The chapter ends with Miles taking her toward a late-night beach, signaling a shift toward real intimacy.
Summary
At closing time at Cherry Hill, Ashleigh is making out with Greg-Craig, having abandoned the double-date setup. She asks Daphne if she can ride home with Miles, and Daphne agrees, leaving with him while Ashleigh departs with Greg-Craig. Miles teases Daphne about Craig's wingman, who ditched her to play solitaire after she nervously listed her food sensitivities.
Driving in his truck with sad music playing—including a song from A Star Is Born—Miles suggests they detour to Big Louie's Drive-In, scandalized that Daphne has lived in northern Michigan for thirteen months without trying their Petoskey fries. Their banter drifts into Daphne's relationship with Peter: their rigid schedules, gym routines, and his keto-friendly cooking. Miles teases her about her wall calendar, and Daphne pushes back about his lack of planning, agreeing he should at least mark his dates so she doesn't walk in on them.
At Big Louie's, Miles orders chocolate-cherry milkshakes and Petoskey fries for them both. Daphne asks how he handled an earlier drunk customer, and Miles explains his philosophy: don't let others control your feelings. He insists he's not in an anger phase over his breakup with Petra and seems genuinely steady, contrasting with Daphne's ongoing misery. After Daphne's first delighted sip of the milkshake, Miles proposes they go to the beach, dismissing the touristy spot Daphne knows and promising the good beaches don't close after dark.
