Chapter 24
Overview
Summary
On August 1st, Daphne returns to her apartment to find her semi-estranged father, Jason, and a stranger named Starfire already inside, having been let in by a flustered Miles. Jason embraces Daphne and introduces Starfire with great enthusiasm, while Daphne struggles to mask her shock at the unannounced visit.
In the kitchen, Miles apologizes for letting them in and offers to be Daphne's escape plan if needed. He chooses to stay and support her, leveraging his easy way with strangers. They return with wine to find Jason smoking a joint indoors; Miles diplomatically asks him to stop, and Jason complies.
Starfire reveals she is Jason's life coach—and now wife—claiming they were married in past lives, including aboard the Titanic. Jason mentions he announced the marriage in Daphne's birthday card, which she had thrown away unopened. He explains they are road-tripping to Vermont and want to stay in town until Monday, though he has booked a motel, surprising Daphne.
Starfire mistakes Daphne and Miles for a couple, prompting awkward clarification that they are just friends and roommates. Jason expresses approval of Miles, alluding to Daphne's prior heartbreak, and asks Daphne to play tour guide for him and his new wife.
Despite old wounds resurfacing—the reminder that her father always prioritized others over her—Daphne notices Jason is, for once, asking rather than assuming. She decides to include him and Starfire in her existing plans with Miles. Miles takes the cue and invites them on a boat outing, which Julia gleefully confirms from the doorway.
