Chapter 12
Overview
Summary
Three weeks after the kiss at the lavender farm, Daphne struggles to suppress her growing attraction to Miles. A late-night kitchen encounter with a shirtless Miles leaves her flustered, and a Sunday trip to Sleeping Bear Dunes—where they ride a dune buggy together—is laden with charged touches and teasing remarks.
The following Sunday, they shop at a farmers' market and make pizzas together. Daphne emerges from the shower in a damp, translucent top, leading to awkward collisions and lingering glances. Over wine and pizza, Miles asks what she wants to do now that she's single, and they begin a nightly ritual of watching action-comedies together, both using the films to distract from mutual desire.
Daphne calls her mother, who is glad Daphne is making friends (with Ashleigh) but knows nothing of Miles. Daphne reflects on refusing financial help from her mom, given how her father exploited her mother for years post-divorce. She texts Ashleigh seeking a hobby, and Ashleigh proposes plans for next Wednesday.
That night, Miles comes home early from work for another movie. While teasing Daphne about her laugh, he pulls her legs across his lap, and the tension finally breaks. They kiss intensely on the couch, escalating to undoing buttons, mutual touching, and eventually mutual pleasure—Daphne climaxes under Miles's hand while agreeing they shouldn't have sex. Just as things continue, Miles's phone rings repeatedly: it's his sister Julia. He apologizes and pulls away to take the call, jolting them both back to reality.
