Chapter 16

Overview

Daphne declines Miles's Saturday invitation, then sees a social media post revealing Peter and Petra have taken her place with Sadie and Cooper in Richmond, devastating her. She reverses course, accepting Miles's invitation and joining Ashleigh's poker night, which turns out to include Harvey, Lenore, and Barb. The evening cements her friendship with Ashleigh and pushes Daphne to commit to becoming an independent "I" rather than half of a "we."

Summary

On Tuesday morning, Daphne catches Miles rushing out to drive Julia to a date. In their first awkward solo encounter since Julia's arrival, Miles mentions he can't do their fake-dating Sunday outing because he has a Saturday night commitment, and offers Daphne his spare ticket. Flustered by her growing attraction, she declines, citing work.

Alone that evening, Daphne scrolls social media and is gutted to see a picture posted by Cooper of Petra and Sadie at the Richmond brunch spot Daphne used to share with them and Peter. Realizing Peter and Petra have fully replaced her in her old life, she has a panic-stricken moment in the bathroom and accepts that she built her entire identity around Peter. Determined to stop wallowing, she texts Ashleigh to join her mystery hobby and texts Miles that she's in for Saturday.

The next night, Ashleigh's monthly poker night turns out to be at Harvey's house—Daphne's library boss—with Lenore and Barb (the asparagus-stand women and friends of Miles) rounding out the group. Daphne learns the group bonded through Ashleigh's late stepmother Adara, a priest at Grace Episcopal who died of stomach cancer five and a half years ago, after which Ashleigh's mom moved to Sedona.

Daphne loses at cards, smokes her first cigar, drinks scotch, and is invited back—and to Harvey's seventy-fifth birthday in October. Sharing a cab home, Ashleigh tells Daphne she's a "we-girl" who orients herself around partners, prompting Daphne to resolve to be an "I." The two share a tender moment of mutual gratitude for their new friendship.
