Chapter 32
Overview
Summary
On a rainy Wednesday, Daphne walks home from the library after another frosty day with Ashleigh, having declined Ashleigh's offered ride. Miles pulls up in an unfamiliar Jeep, having tried to meet her at the library. He apologizes and admits he panicked, confirming that he spent the previous day helping Petra move and lost track of time, then traded vehicles with her so he could rush back with a box of fudge.
Daphne tells Miles he's off the hook because he warned her he panics under expectations. Miles pushes back, blurting that he loves her. Daphne refuses to accept it, arguing that an 'I love you' and grand gestures don't matter when he can't show up for the small, ordinary things. She reveals she has an interview next week for a job near her mom and reaffirms that they always knew this wouldn't work. Miles accepts it with quiet hurt, and Daphne gets out of the car, watching him drive away.
Walking past the taffy-green cottage, Daphne sees a Realtor showing the home to a young couple and reflects that real life is built from mundane, accumulating moments, not grand gestures—and that the only person she truly belongs with is her mother.
Daphne calls her mom and tells her about her father's visit. Her mother apologizes for moving them around so much, admitting she was a cynic ruled by fear, and urges Daphne not to talk herself out of hope. The conversation reframes Daphne's self-understanding: she has been running from discomfort. Resolving to face her mess instead, Daphne texts Harvey to set up an impromptu poker night to repair things with Ashleigh.
