Chapter 22
Overview
Summary
Daphne stumbles out of the bathroom into Miles, still trapped in her wedding dress with a broken zipper. Panicked and short of breath, she lets him try to free her. He moves her into the bathroom, then his bedroom for better leverage, asking her to brace against the dresser as he wrestles with the stuck zipper.
To distract her from her embarrassment, Miles confesses that when Petra received their save-the-date, she told him she didn't want to get married, and he assumed she meant in general rather than not wanting to marry him specifically. The admission cracks Daphne up, breaking the tension. He finally requests ChapStick, which he uses to lubricate the zipper, and the dress at last slides open, his knuckles grazing her bare back.
Miles pulls a worn camel-print T-shirt from his drawer and helps her change, the dress pooling at her feet. They linger in a charged moment, teasing each other about the shirt. Daphne tells Miles he makes everyone feel like sunlight; he says she feels like Lake Michigan—cool, refreshing, surprising.
Daphne deflects the rising intimacy by asking about Julia. Miles admits Julia still won't share her real reason for moving back and is hiding behind the excuse of taking care of him. They share a quiet, tender exchange before Daphne steps back, thanking him again, and the moment closes without crossing a line.
