Millie attends her parole meeting, keeping her new stability quiet while avoiding past missteps. A sleepless night leads to bonding with Andrew over TV, where he reveals Cecelia isn’t peanut-allergic, contradicting prior claims. Nina catches them, imposes strict boundaries, asserts her marriage and pregnancy, and humiliates Millie, escalating household tension.
Summary
Millie meets her parole officer, Pam, relieved she can finally report a job and housing, though she omits past lies about being fired and briefly living in her car. Pam praises Millie’s progress and urges her to build healthy connections and not to settle in relationships. Millie insists she must focus on staying out of prison, but an unwanted attraction to Andrew flickers in her thoughts.
Unable to sleep in the stuffy attic, Millie sneaks to the living room TV around 1 a.m. to mimic the background noise of prison. Andrew comes downstairs in his undershirt and boxers for water and joins her watching Family Feud. Their light banter turns revealing when Andrew, contemplating peanut butter, casually states Cecelia is not allergic to peanuts—contradicting what Cecelia and Nina had told Millie.
As Millie warms to Andrew’s easy humor and apparent kindness, Nina appears, furious to find them together at night. Andrew explains he was getting water, but when challenged, he backs down and goes to bed. Nina orders Millie to wear “appropriate attire,” stay out of family spaces after bedtime, and implies hiring a maid may have been a mistake, reasserting control.
When Millie tries to clarify nothing inappropriate happened, Nina mocks the idea she is threatened, declaring she and Andrew are soulmates with a child and another baby on the way. After ordering Millie to clean up, Nina leaves. Humiliated and angry, Millie hurls Andrew’s glass, cutting her foot amid the shards. She resolves to clean thoroughly and be more cautious, newly wary of the household’s contradictions and Nina’s jealousy.
