Chapter 22
Contains spoilersOverview
Millie avoids Andrew despite a growing attraction, while Nina and Andrew remain awkwardly distant. A theater-ticket mix-up leads Nina to threaten docking Millie’s pay for the nonrefundable costs. Andrew steps in to try to fix it, highlighting his quiet support and the escalating power imbalance and financial risk Millie faces.
Summary
Millie spends the week deliberately avoiding Andrew, grappling with a growing crush and the fear of losing her job if she crosses a line. She focuses on her duties and prepares dinner, noting the strained politeness between Nina and Andrew and Nina’s uncharacteristic dishevelment.
Nina arrives, praises the meal, and confirms Millie booked orchestra seats and a room at The Plaza for the show. Millie is confident she secured the last two seats for Sunday, expecting Nina and Andrew’s getaway and a night with the house to herself.
When Andrew walks in, Nina insists she asked for tickets for a week from Sunday. She claims she cannot attend this Sunday because she must drive Cecelia to summer camp and stay overnight. The disagreement escalates as Nina blames Millie for the error and declares the expensive tickets and hotel will be deducted from Millie’s paycheck.
Andrew interrupts to deescalate, offering to call the credit card company to seek a refund. Nina grudgingly agrees but warns Millie she will pay if refunds fail. The confrontation leaves Millie shaken, reinforcing Nina’s control over her finances, Andrew’s quiet attempts to protect her, and the widening rift between Nina and Andrew.
